Independence of Vietnam- The Beginning

One of the scholars who left Vietnam for a better education, named Ho Chi Minh, founded the Indochinese Communist Party (6). During World War II, Minh decided it was time to come back and influence Vietnam with his ideas (6). Japan, during World War II, occupied Vietnam (1). France was still in Vietnam but wanted to avoid a direct confrontation with Japan, hoping to coexist peacefully. (6). Japan agreed to allow them to stay, as long as Japan got to move supplies and arms through Vietnam (6). Later, Japan broke this agreement, executed a coup d’état, gaining complete control of Vietnam (6). Ho Chi Minh finally came back, after 30 years in exile, and started another Communist party: Viet Minh (6). This group made the Japanese hand over their weapons, but allowed them to leave Vietnam peacefully (6). In August of 1945, Viet Minh came to power and in September, declared the independence of Vietnam. Vietnam became the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (6).
